As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, timbrels, pipes and harps being played before them, and they will be prophesying. The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person.”

(1 Samuel 10: 5b-6)

God never changes. But He is continuously changing us. And He does so through many different ways: sometimes it is through trials, sometimes it is through learning, sometimes it is through conviction, and sometimes it is through worship.

In the passage above, Samuel has just anointed Saul as the King of Israel and is giving him instructions on what to do at this point. As Saul meets prophets on the road who are worshiping God, God’s Spirit powerfully changes him into the man God intended to rule over Israel.

Worship – true worship – changes us. It is not singing the songs or praying the prayer, but it is the encounter with the God of the universe that leaves us different that what we were. As you think about your New Year’s resolutions, you may think that there’s really nothing in your life you need to change. But God continuously desires to make you into a better person. He loves you just as you are, but He loves you too much to leave you as you are. Open up your heart to Him in worship and let Him change you into someone new!

In Christ, Amy Smith
