“Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.” - Ephesians 5:18-19
What role does the Holy Spirit play in our lives? He does many things: empowers us (Acts 4:31), teaches us (John 14:26), encourages us (Acts 9:31), renews us (Titus 3:5), and, as can be seen throughout Scripture, connects us to God.
The Holy Spirit also plays a similar role in worship. Every believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation, but here Paul tells us to be filled with the Spirit: He is to be a part of every aspect of our lives, including our worship. Worship is not just praising God; it is an opportunity to connect with God.
When you sing your “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs”, let the Holy Spirit be a part of your worship. Sing from your heart, and as you sing, the Holy Spirit will connect your heart to the very heart of God.
